Linear programming

Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) — First Year

Subject: Business Statistics (MGT 202)

Unit 11: Quantitative Analysis

Academic Year: 2083/84

Topic Objectives

After studying this topic, students should be able to:

  • Explain the scope and key elements of linear programming.
  • Select suitable statistical procedures, carry out calculations and interpret business results.

Curriculum Scope

  • Formulation with two decision variables
  • Graphical maximization solutions
  • Graphical minimization solutions

Detailed Microsyllabus

  1. Linear-programming formulation

    1. Two decision variables, linear objective and constraints.
    2. Nonnegativity restrictions and interpretation of coefficients.
    3. Translate a business problem into a mathematical model.
  2. Graphical solution

    1. Plot constraints and identify the feasible region.
    2. Evaluate corner points for maximization or minimization.
    3. Recognize infeasible, unbounded or multiple-optimum cases where encountered.
